The Pink Panther is a series of comedy films that were first released in 1963. They feature the French police Detective, Inspector Clouseau who investigated the theft of a large and valuable diamond, known as the Pink Panther. The diamond gave off a pink gleam when held to the light and also revealed a flaw looking like a leaping panther, which is how it got its name. There were a total of eleven films in the series, although not all of them feature the theft of the diamond as the main event in the story.
The Character of the Pink Panther
While the Pink Panther was actually the name of the diamond, the first film featured an animated opening sequence which introduced the character of the Pink Panther. On close inspection of the Pink Panther diamond, the view zooms into the flaw of the leaping panther from which leaps the animated character of the Pink Panther who then begins his famous walk across the screen. The Pink Panther character became the star of its own series of animated cartoons and continued to feature in the opening of the films. The short animated cartoons featured on a Saturday morning on American TV and the Pink Panther character become famous in his own right. He has become a recognized character in households around the world.
